Single files
Editing just a single file
With Editey you can either edit just a single file or you can work on multiple files at once as explained in the workspaces guide.
This guide covers the basics when working on a single file.
Open files
Opening a file from Google Drive
Right-click on the file you want to edit right from Google Drive and select Open with -> Editey.
Make Editey your default app so that you can open and edit a file by just double-clicking on the file. Editey will then be opened and you can immediately start editing the file.
Click on the settings icon in Google Drive and select Manage Apps on the left. Check the Use by default boxes for your installed Editey apps.
Save changes
All changes will be saved immediately
Whenever you type into the document, all changed will be saved immediately. When collaborating on a file all coworkers will see your changes in real time, just like in Google Docs.
Editey will sync your changes back to Google Drive at least once per minute.
When reloading the preview of your project, all changes will show up even if the content has not been synced to your drive.
If you need the content to be available on Google Drive so that you can access it from other applications you can use the Save now action in the File menu or simply press the drive icon in the toolbar.
Preferences
Select your preferred theme, font size and more
You can change the look and feel of Editey by clicking on the preferences icon in the toolbar or by selecting Preferences in the File menu.
The preferences will be stored with your account, so they will be applied to all files when working with Editey.
Editey comes with a number of carefully designed themes and you may find one that suits your taste.
Formatting
Auto-format your code
For some file types like HTML, JavaScript and CSS you will get automatic source code formatting.
Select Format code in the Edit menu or click on the format icon in the main toolbar.
Preview
See your results in real-time
When working on individual HTML files you will get a live preview on the right-hand side.
If you are referencing any resources (e.g. stylesheets, code or images) in your HTML code, make sure that you enter the complete URL starting with https://
The preview will be updated whenever you modify your source code.
View options
Adjust the visual appearance of your code
In the View menu you will find some options to adjust the appearance of your source code.
These settings are temporary and will not be stored with your account or the file.
They come in handy to track down issues by displaying invisible characters, indent guides and more.
When working on HTML files you can also hide or show the live preview.
Sharing files
Share files just like in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
You can share individual files right from the Google Drive interface by right-clicking on the file and selecting Share…
You can also share the file from within Editey by clicking on the Share button in the upper right corner.
Sharing individual files from within Editey will only work if you have installed the dedicated file editor (e.g. HTML Editey) and have opened the file from Google Drive.
Revision history
View and restore previous versions
View previous versions of your files by clicking See revision history under the File menu item. Editey opens a list of versions displayed with date and time. Select a version and click Restore this revision.
Comments
Add comments and replies
Editey provides a comment and reply function that you can use via the Comments button in the upper right corner.
